The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis for the clay mineralogy studies in a clastic reservoir

Abstract The complete characteristics knowledge of clay minerals is necessary in the evaluation studies hydrocarbon reservoirs. Ten samples taken from two wells a heterogeneous clastic gas reservoir formation NE Iran were selected to conduct transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) tests for mineralogy studies. FTIR analysis showed that there clear signs all samples. wavenumber region was detected be 3621, 3432, 1034, and 515 cm ?1 illite, 3567, 1613, 1088, 990, 687, 651, magnesium-rich chlorite, 3700, 463 kaolinite, glauconite. After screening by method, then analyzed powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), wavelength dispersive fluorescence (WDXRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PXRD SEM result illite far most common present. Kaolinite, traces smectite mixed-layer clays both illite–smectite chlorite-smectite types also recognized. combination WDXRF results could quantify abundances each well too. It concluded successfully show absorption bonds constituent clays. However, spectra overlapped those respective constituents minerals. This can considered as evidence usefulness technique
